One of my greatest memories of my dad was when I was just a child, maybe grade 4. He was working the 6pm-6am shift at 20 hall in St. James. We lived in Headingley and because we had to haul our own water my dad drove the truck with the water tank in the back. I remember always climbing into the back of the truck and hiding behind the tank and by the time he got to the end of our road, I would pop my head up and scare the heck out of him. So if he was late for those shifts, now you know why. It got to the point where he would check the back of the truck before he pulled out of the driveway.

Another funny story that tells a lot about my dad and how he didn't have to spend money if he didn't have to. Our truck was a standard and I learned from the age of 8 how to drive a standard because we had to haul our own hay in the Autumn to cover the septic tank in our back yard so my job was to drive in the field and my dad and brothers would put the hay on the trailer. One summer I got a kite so we headed to this farm road with an open field to fly my kite. We couldn't get the kite to stay up because the wind had died down so my dad's bright idea was to let me drive and he would stand in the back of the truck and fly the kite. It went really good for awhile until I accidentally braked and he fell in the back of the truck and let go of the kite. It drifted about a mile away into the dense woods and I thought that would be the end of it. He was so determined to find this kite, I waited at the truck for almost 2 hours but low and behold he came out of the woods with my kite in hand. Apparently he had to climb a tree for this kite that at the time probably cost less than a dollar. I don't know if it was determination or just a way for him to save a buck. All I know is that he was a Hero in my eyes and we will surely miss him.
